Local ProStart Students to Intern with “The Guy Fieri Roadshow”
Students from Silverado and Carson High Schools to assist on Dec. 19
The Nevada Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NvRAEF) today announced that ProStart students from Silverado High School in Las Vegas and Carson High School in Carson City will intern with Food Network star Guy Fieri (Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Guy’s Big Bite and Ultimate Recipe Showdown) at the Las Vegas stop on “The Guy Fieri Roadshow.” “The Guy Fieri Roadshow” hits The House of Blues on Saturday, December 19. On the tour, Fieri is taking American food culture to new heights by combining the worlds of food and rock ‘n’ roll. To purchase tickets, visit www.guyfieri.com.
“Our students are thrilled to take part in “The Guy Fieri Roadshow” and represent our state’s ProStart program on such a prominent stage,” said Katherine Jacobi, president and CEO of the NvRA. “They’ve put in hard work in the classroom and on the job in ProStart, and it’s great to be able to reward them with an exciting opportunity like this.”
“The Guy Fieri Roadshow,” produced by Fieri’s company Knuckle Sandwich, will hit 21 cities in 30 days and play in venues that seat 2,000-5,000 fans. At each stop on “The Guy Fieri Roadshow,” Fieri teams up with Australian-based flair bartender Hayden "Woody" Wood, a local celebrated chef, and local ProStart students. The students will work with Guy’s team to help prep food before the show and be on hand behind the scenes to help during the show itself. The NvRAEF selected the participating schools because they are the 2009 ProStart state champions in the culinary and management divisions. The participating students, and accompanying educator, are:
- Wendy Dagdagan, Silverado High School
- Austin Jablonski, Silverado High School
- Stephanie Simms, Silverado High School
- Teacher Ann Taylor, Silverado High School
- Cameron Childers, Carson High School
- Mitch Parra, Carson High School
- Sean Weekley, Carson High School
- Teacher Penny Reynolds, Carson High School
“ProStart students are the best in Nevada, and I knew they were my go to help for the event,” said Fieri. “I can’t wait to give them an incredible backstage experience while I blow the audience’s mind!”
Three years ago, Fieri competed and won the second season of The Next Food Network Star to launch his career with the Food Network. In October 2008, Guy released his first book based on his widely popular show, Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives: An All-American Road Trip…with Recipes! (William Morrow). In its first week, it landed on The New York Times Best Sellers List. A follow up book, More Diners, Drive-ins and Dives: Another Drop-Top Culinary Cruise Through America's Finest and Funkiest (William Morrow), is currently available in stores.
An ardent supporter of ProStart, Fieri brought his production team to the 2009 National ProStart Invitational to film Guy Fieri’s Top of the Class, airing on the Food Network on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 7:30 pm ET/PT . Fieri has also been athree-term President of the Restaurant Association of the Redwood Empire and serves on the Board of Directors for the Educational Foundation of the California Restaurant Association. Just over 2500 students in Nevada join the 80,000 students nationwide served by ProStart, a two-year curriculum supported by the National Restaurant Association and state restaurant associations across the United States that blends classroom learning with mentored work experience to teach high school students the management and culinary skills needed for a career in the restaurant and foodservice industry. When students meet academic standards, complete a checklist of competencies, and work at least 400 hours in the industry, they are awarded the ProStart National Certificate of Achievement that signifies they are well qualified to enter the industry workforce. The career-building program is managed nationally by National Restaurant Association Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Restaurant Association.
