Nevada Restaurant Association Luncheon To Shed Light On 2006 Election Results; Support NRA-PAC

Exciting post-election discussion will feature Jon Ralston from KLAS-TV

During a Nov. 17 luncheon hosted by the Nevada Restaurant Association (NvRA), Jon Ralston from KLAS-TV will provide detailed analysis of the federal and state election results and how the Nevada restaurant industry will be impacted.

The event, sponsored by Mission Industries, will be held at Lawry’s The Prime Rib, 4043 Howard Hughes Parkway, Las Vegas, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Priced at $40 for members and $45 for non-members per person tax and handling fees included, admission to the luncheon will benefit the National Restaurant Association Political Action Committee’s (NRA-PAC) programs and legislative lobbying efforts that support positive change for the food and beverage industry. To register for the luncheon, please call (702) 878-2313.

“The NRA-PAC packs a powerful punch, scouting out promising office-seekers for Congress, regardless of party affiliation,” says NvRA Board member Bob Ansara. “More than 90 percent of pro-restaurant candidates supported by the NRA-PAC in the last election cycle won their seats in Congress, so it greatly behooves the Nevada restaurant industry to be involved.

“It’s never too early to gear up and support pro-restaurant candidates for the next election cycle! Sign up today to attend this important event,” Ansara urges.

TIP TALK Forum

Association Helps Beat IRS Tip Rules Blues

NvRA continues to help educate the industry

The Nevada Restaurant Association on Oct. 24 hosted an educational forum featuring National Restaurant Association Senior Vice President and General Counsel Peter Kilgore, who spoke about the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) often confusing system for reporting employee tips.

Still concerned that tipped employees may not be fully reporting and paying taxes on all the tip income they receive, the IRS continues to look for ways to increase employee tip-income reports without having to resort to time consuming IRS audits of employer or employee records.

On July 31, the IRS published its new and latest tip-income reporting program, called the "Attributed Tip Income Program" (ATIP). ATIP is a new three-year pilot program that both varies and overlaps existing IRS tip-reporting and education initiatives offered to employers and employees in the foodservice and beverage industry.

Kilgore gave an overview of how the ATIP agreement compares to previous IRS tip agreements the TRDA, TRAC, and EmTRAC and pros and cons of signing a tip agreement.

Avian Flu Forum

Nevada Restaurant Association Hosts Educational Forum On Avian Influenza

Nationally Recognized Food-Science Expert Arms Business Community With Facts

The Nevada Restaurant Association (NvRA) took the lead today on providing its membership and others in the business community with the facts necessary to deal with a possible future outbreak of Avian Influenza (AI) in this country.

The NvRA Educational Forum on Avian Influenza covered the latest information on U.S. and international efforts to control avian influenza in animal populations; what an outbreak among animals could mean to businesses; and how to prepare for the possibility of a human pandemic.

“Although the avian flu strain that has been causing problems abroad has not yet been found in the United States, we need to stay up to speed should the virus ever be detected in the bird population here,” says NvRA President and CEO Paul Hartgen, adding that a large part of the Association’s mission is to educate and protect its members.

Donna M. Garren, National Restaurant Association vice president, health and safety regulatory affairs, spoke at the June 27 event held at Maggiano’s Little Italy in Las Vegas. Dr. Garren is a nationally respected food-science specialist with an extensive background and expertise in food science and nutrition.

“There continues to be media attention surrounding the on-going outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in poultry and wild birds throughout Asia, Europe, Africa, and Canada. Restaurant companies need to be aware that this increased media attention can undermine consumer confidence in the safety of poultry products as the migration of the virus moves toward the United States,” says Garren.

“In addition, President Bush and his administration have recently issued an Implementation Plan for preparing for a human flu pandemic. The plan calls for the private sector to begin preparing now. Being that the restaurant industry is the cornerstone of America’s economy, companies will play an integral role in community and state preparations and planning,” Garren adds.

Forum panelists included Tim Jones, Director of Safety and Risk Management for MGM Grand; Kay Godby, Director of Public Health Preparedness from Southern Nevada Health District; and Guy Fiore, VP of Nevada Self Insurance Groups.

The forum was sponsored by NRSIG/CHSI, (Nevada Restaurant Self Insured Group), AVW-Telev, RSVP Party Rentals, Maggiano’s Little Italy, the National Restaurant Association, and the Nevada Hospitality Foundation.

Nevada Gubernatorial Candidates Discuss State’s Future during Nevada Restaurant Association PAC Luncheon

Proceeds from Event to go toward Campaigns of Pro-Restaurant Candidates in Nevada and Nationwide

Meeting informally yesterday at the Siena Hotel Spa Casino with a large audience of restaurateurs during the Nevada Restaurant Association’s (NvRA) Political Action Committee (PAC) Luncheon, several of the candidates running for Nevada governor answered questions from restaurateurs dealing with the proposed minimum-wage increase, immigration reform, smoking bans, education, health-care reform and obesity lawsuits.

Anjeanette Damon, capitol bureau chief, Reno Gazzette Journal, moderated the “Luncheon and Candidates Panel Discussion” between State Senator Bob Beers, U.S. Rep. Jim Gibbons, Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson, and State Senator Dina Titus.

“This highly successful event was a rousing exchange of ideas,” says Nevada Restaurant Association Chairman Michael Coward. “We greatly appreciate the participation of the candidates and look forward to learning even more in the months leading up to the election about their position on the issues crucial to our industry.”

Proceeds from the event will be contributed to both the Nevada Restaurant Association PAC and the National Restaurant Association Political Action Committee (NRA-PAC).

“While the politics in Washington, D.C., may seem far removed, Congress’ every action impacts our lives and our livelihood,” says NRA-PAC Committee Vice-Chairman Sam J. Facchini. “There is a saying in Washington, ‘You can be a participant in the political process or a victim of the political process.’ Being in the restaurant profession, it’s important to participate so that special interest groups, trial lawyers or government red tape doesn’t regulate us out of business.”
